Counsellor Required (Compton Care): West Midlands

To offer counselling to patients and their families, including bereavement work.


The post holder will work closely with the Bereavement Service Manager and will be responsible for the delivery of a counselling service for patients and their families. This will essentially include:

  • Support patients and those close to them with the emotional impact of their life-limiting or incurable illness
  • To undertake assessments and plan appropriate follow up
  • To process and manage referrals
  • To provide 1:1 and group support both pre and post bereavement
  • Support the development and delivery of support groups
  • Offer bereavement counselling to clients who are experiencing a more complex response to their grief
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in the method adopted by the organisation
  • Participate in audit and research
  • Actively participate in regular line management and clinical supervision
  • Manage own caseload
  • Organise own time, manage resources effectively and use initiative
  • To work within the guidelines of BACP or any other relevant professional body
  • Actively participate in meetings as agreed with Line Manager
  • Work when necessary out of core hours
  • Working collaboratively, contribute to the development of the Psychological Therapies Service provided by Compton Care
    • Assess and monitor risks in own and other’s practice ensuring safe delivery of care, which is evidence based and adheres to good practice guidance
    • To provide advice to other Compton Care staff in the provision of counselling and bereavement support.
    • To be aware of current research and thinking, relating to working within palliative care and bereavement and be involved in the development of the service.


  • Safeguarding: monitor, observe and report to appropriate management any safeguarding concern and liaise proactively with other professionals


  • To have a counselling qualification at Diploma Level or above
  • To be BACP or equivalent Accredited or be eligible for accreditation
  • A minimum of two years post-qualification experience with at least 150 post qualification hours
  • Significant experience of working therapeutically in a Health Care setting
  • Experience of working one to one and with families and groups
