Applications are invited from suitably qualified Counsellors who have an interest in and experience of  working with older people.

The Older Adult Primary Care Psychological Therapies service is a specialist team providing counselling and psychological therapies to  older people in Salford.

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to work with our team to provide assessments and specialist counselling interventions to older people presenting with a range of emotional difficulties including depression, loss/adjustment issues and physical health comorbidity.

The post holder will provide a high quality counselling provision to older people across Salford. They will be responsible for conducting assessments and delivering specialist counselling interventions to older people presenting with with range of emotional difficulties. The successful candidate will demonstrate prior experience of working with older people  and have knowledge  of  the physical  and mental processes of ageing and the challenges encountered in later life including bereavement, adjustment and loss and isolation.

The applicant will also need to demonstrate skills in the use of integrative counselling approaches and  adapt their interventions  to the needs of older people presenting with physical health, sensory and cognitive difficulties.

Previous work experience within the NHS  and also working with older people is essential.  Applicants must hold a minimum of a diploma-level in Counselling and be registered with the BACP.  BACP accreditation is highly desirable.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder is primarily responsible for the provision of specialist counselling services to older adults presenting with a range of emotional difficulties .  This work will usually be on an individual basis but will also require working with carers and families as appropriate.  They will work in a variety of settings including home visits, care settings and  community gateway centres and where appropriate provide telephone/virtual therapy.  They will be required to liaise with other primary care and secondary mental health services, social services and non-statutory agencies in order to ensure the needs of the client are met.

The post holder will contribute to liaison and promotion of the service. They will plan and organise their work schedule, tasks and caseload and will receive line management and clinical supervision as the role demands. The post holder will contribute to  service development  initiatives and  to the facilitation of groups and staff training as appropriate.

The post holder will be required to maintain appropriate clinical records, complete risk assessments and outcome measures and to provide written clinical reports  in accordance with Trust standards.
