Barnardo’s Healthy Minds Wiltshire

Location

Wiltshire: workers will be home based but expected to travel across the county and maximise opportunities to work remotely as well as face to face as the Service is Wiltshire wide.

Service Aims

Barnardo’s has been delivering Wiltshire’s Early Mental Health and Counselling Support Service since April 2020.

The service aims to improve outcomes for children and young people (aged 5 – 18) with emotional wellbeing and/or emerging low level mental health problems through the provision of high quality, accessible and evidence-based interventions. The service works closely with other specialist providers in Wiltshire, including CAMHS services who work with more complex cases.

Children and Young People (CYP) said that they want a central point of access to a menu of support with accessible, welcoming and flexible options.

Key elements of the overall model are:

  • Integration with the ‘single point of access’ so that referrals and self-referrals are directed to the most appropriate service and people only have to tell their story once
  • Provision of onyourmind.org.uk website as the central hub for mental health information, advice and access to services within Wiltshire
    • Advice, information and community connection for CYP, parent/carers and professionals so that we make the best use of resources in Wiltshire and beyond
    • Early contact with children, young people and families to discuss what is important to them and provide choice about next steps
    • A planning and assessment meeting for higher need CYP (and parents/carers where appropriate) to provide tailored advice and information, enable self-management and plan for ongoing support needs
    • Therapy/counselling for higher need CYP and offering a blended approach of face to face and online/phone sessions to suit the need of the individual
    • Groupwork for CYP using the Decider Skills programme which is based on cognitive-behavioural therapy and build skills and strategies for CYP and their families
    • Positive activities which we deliver with other organisations in Wiltshire to improve wellbeing
    • Building the skills and knowledge of professionals, parents and carers so that CYP are supported with their wellbeing long beyond any support episode
