We are seeking to appoint an experienced professional who will provide a sensitive and confidential counselling service to students at St Mary’s Senior School during term time. Applicants are expected to have a formal counselling qualification and possess a proven ability to empathise and relate positively to young people.

Education/Qualifications

  • Post graduate Diploma Masters level in Counselling or Psychotherapy
  • BACP Accreditation, UKCP registration or BPCFurther therapeutic training or qualification in working with children and young people
  • Further therapeutic training or qualification in working with children and young people
  • Knowledge
    • An understanding of the developmental, emotional, social and educational issues of children and young people.
    • An awareness of the range of needs of people from diverse ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds,
    • Knowledge of the local mental health and CAMHS service.
    • Knowledge of the Children’s Act and legislation pertaining to children
    • Have a thorough understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection Issues

    Experience

    • Minimum of two years post qualification experience
    • Minimum of two years’ experience of working with children and young people
    • Experience of working as part of a team

    Skills and Abilities

    • Possess a proven ability to empathise and relate positively to young people
    • An understanding of the effects and manifestations of homesickness and interest in issues specific to boarders
    • An ability to relate to young people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds
    • Good written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage your own caseload and use initiative
    • Ability to work under pressure
    • Flexibility to be prepared to develop the service as necessary
    • An interest in ongoing professional development so as to further enhance the service the school can offer its students
    • Positive communication and listening skills
    • Patience, tolerance and sensitivity
    • A mature and non-judgemental outlook
    • Enthusiastic and prepared to support positively the school’s ethos and aims in word and deed
