School Counsellor Required: Chichester, West Sussex

Responsible for:

Delivering a safe and professional counselling service to students, working effectively with a diverse range of needs Consulting with: All colleagues Reporting to: Head of Individual Needs Responsibilities of Position:

 To provide support, advice and guidance to individuals who are referred for counselling.

 To identify counselling and mental health needs through an initial assessment of need.

 To engage with individuals through short interventions, referring to external professionals for extended or intensive counselling.

 Risk assess situations and provide therapeutic informed interventions.

 To ensure accurate case records and evidence of support are kept and stored securely.

 To provide progress reports on referred students.

 To advise on student welfare issues as appropriate and to support staff in dealing with students who have difficulties.

 To liaise with family and school staff as appropriate.

 To network with other agencies with a view to easing  referrals and accessing specialist consultants.

 Sustain links with the wider community health services.

 Support the work of the Pastoral Team.

 Attend regular departmental meetings.

 To make appropriate contributions to case meetings, and written reports.

 Keep abreast of developments within the field.


 Attend all statutory training that is required to work within a School

 Take part in the school appraisal system

 Be sympathetic to the school’s aims and ethos

 Be aware of and comply with, policies and procedures relating to child protection, health and safety, security and confidentiality, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person

 All staff are to read the latest edition of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and sign the list in the office to confirm this has been read and understood

 Staff will be expected to comply with any reasonable request from the Head to undertake work that is not specified in this job description

 Staff are expected to be courteous to colleagues and provide a welcoming environment to visitors and telephone callers

The duties and responsibilities of this post may vary from time to time and post holders may be expected to undertake other duties of a similar level/nature which is considered appropriate to the level of the post.
