The Oakdale Centre was established twenty-five years ago and is highly regarded as a professional therapy provider for adults as well as children and their families.

We provide psychological therapies from our centres in Harrogate, Leeds and Halifax as well as other venues across Yorkshire and in a number of schools.

The Role

This role is an exciting opportunity for a qualified and experienced therapist to work within a supportive environment where the pastoral care of the children and young people is paramount.

You would be part of a service providing short-term therapy mainly in a secondary school setting, although some primary school work might also be required. You would be supported by an experienced Clinical Services Manager and Schools Service Coordinator.

We work closely within our schools service to ensure that our practitioners are well supported and feel part of the school team where their role is clearly understood. We have also developed innovative systems and technology to support this work and ensure that all our practitioners are provided with an appropriate room within school to provide therapy.

Job Description

To provide therapy for children and young people within a school in the Pontefract area on one or two half days per week.


  • To provide short-term face to face individual therapy to children and young people referred to the service and liaise with parents as necessary
  • To work with school staff and Oakdale staff to ensure that the service runs smoothly
  • To use the system developed by Oakdale to make your appointments and manage your caseload
  • To build good working relationships with school staff to ensure that there is effective communication between yourself and the pastoral team so that the children’s needs are met
  • To keep accurate and timely clinical records and collect required data in line with Oakdale’s systems and procedures so that the service can be monitored and evaluated on a regular basis by the service coordinator
  • To get to know local external agencies and NHS services in case onward referral is required
  • To work within the guidelines of your regulatory body, usually BACP, UKCP or HCPC.
  • To attend clinical and case management supervision provided by Oakdale – both individually and within a small group
  • To attend any meetings or training that might be required to support your work
  • To familiarise yourself with Oakdale’s policies and procedures and comply with these, paying particular attention to the safeguarding policy and information governance.

Person Specification

  • Counselling or Psychotherapy qualification
  • Safeguarding Level 3 training (this will be provided if necessary)
  • Experience of paid or voluntary therapeutic work with children or young people in a healthcare or educational setting
  • Experienced at providing assessments with children referred for therapy and liaising with parents as part of the assessment process
  • Have a working understanding of child and adolescent development and the issues affecting their emotional wellbeing
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Reasonable IT skills
  • The ability to communicate effectively.
  • The ability to work on your own initiative and manage your own caseload.


Oakdale considers that this opportunity is suitable for candidates interested in either an employed or self-employed position. Salary or hourly rate according to qualifications and experience, it would be in the region of £30 per hour.

Two 4-hour sessions each week – days and times negotiable.
