Here are a few tips to help secure a placement!
(A few of the latest placement opportunities at the bottom of the page)
Searching for placement providers is a time-consuming task
Being rejected is quite a knock to your own sense of self.
There’s also a risk and stress that you’ll need to apply for an extension to your course.
This means a delay in qualifying within the arranged time schedule, simply due to the lack of client hours.
The lack of counselling placements has always been an issue for trainee student counsellors. So it’s imperative to use any relevant personal or professional experience that you have, and one important one is ‘listening skills’.
Any previous or current experience in listening skills will help to secure a placement. This could be at work, or any type of ‘listening’ support you’ve given to a vulnerable family member or friend.
When contacting a service provider that specialises in a particular area or serves a specific demographic, try to convey any experience, personal or with family or friend, you may currently have, or have had in that area.
It will show your suitability for that particular placement with that specific specialism above other applicants.
Some service providers offers in-house supervision and some do not. If in-house supervision is not available, try and find an external supervisor before you go to your interview.
